Picking out the right sofa style for your home can be a bit tricky. With so many designs, sizes and color options, it can be difficult to choose. A sofa is an investment that is not to be taken lightly. Since you’ll have this piece of furniture for years to come, you want to make the right decision.

Choose The Right Sofa Size or Layout
The right size of sofa will depend on the size of your room, as well as the other furniture you plan to pair it with. A room that feels cluttered or too full of furniture can negatively impact your mood, so pay close attention when choosing a new couch.
A very spacious living room or den might do well with a sectional or sleeper sofa, while a smaller living room might be better suited for a loveseat or compact sofa.
If you prefer to snooze or lie down on your sofa, look for a sofa that is at least 90″ long for the most room.
Know Your Sofa Styles
Before you can decide on the right sofa for your home, you’ll need to select the style of sofa you prefer. There are three basic sofa styles: traditional, contemporary and transitional. Our friend Robin explains the three styles in this video:
The traditional style is elegant and rooted in European heritage. Its features include ornate finishes, elaborate carvings, and dark woods. The traditional style sofa typically has rolled arms with nail head details, skirts or turned legs.
The contemporary style is a complete departure from the traditional. It features clean lines and soft edges. The color is often a subtle pattern or a solid color. This style is associated with the Art Deco period, where simple, urban-like designs flourished.
As a rule of thumb, traditional and contemporary styles are opposites. But the most popular style today merges traditional and contemporary styles into one. Transitional sofas, which blend these two styles, are classic, casual and comfortable. They evoke a clean and serene surrounding by blending simple and sophisticated designs with neutral fabrics and colors. The balance of function, design and versatility make the transitional sofa a timeless style and a smart investment.

Pick Your Perfect Fabric
When choosing your new couch, you’ll also want to familiarize yourself with the different durable fabric options for furniture that are available.
Technology has come a long way, and there are plenty of durable synthetic fibers on the market, as well as beautiful natural fabrics like leather or linen.
If you have small children or pets, consider the colors and patterns of your new sofa’s fabric as well. Dark colors and busy prints can help camouflage spills and stains.
