Here at Woodstock Furniture & Mattress Outlet, we carry a wide variety of furniture for the entire home. That includes cribs, toddler beds, changing tables and other nursery furniture. As a result, we occasionally get questions from new and expectant parents about furnishing nurseries and kids bedrooms. That leads to one of the most common crib questions we hear from shoppers: “Aren’t crib mattresses all the same size?”

The short answer is no, not all crib mattresses are the same size. In other words, crib mattresses are not universally interchangeable. However, there is a degree of standardization that we’ll dive into below.

You might think a crib is a crib, right? For new parents in particular, it’s easy to assume that any mattress labeled "crib mattress" will work just fine. However, not only is that assumption incorrect, but it can also be dangerous.

That’s because having a compatible crib mattress is not just a matter of convenience. It is a safety issue. A mattress that does not fit the crib properly can leave gaps around the edges, and those gaps can create serious risks for a sleeping infant.

Standardized: Full-Size Crib Mattresses

For most parents shopping here in the United States, the good news is that full-size cribs and full-size crib mattresses are federally regulated and standardized. That means full-size crib mattresses are made specifically to fit standard full-size cribs.

In the U.S., full-size crib mattresses must meet specific federal size requirements. A standard full-size crib mattress must be:

• Must be at least 27 1/4 inches wide
• Must be at least 51 1/4 inches long
• No more than 6 inches thick

These specific dimensions for a full-size U.S. crib mattress exist for a reason: to eliminate dangerous gaps. Federal regulations, put in place by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), lock in these precise measurements to prevent the risks of entrapment and suffocation.

For parents buying a standard full-size crib and full-size crib mattress, this standardization helps make shopping safer and simpler. You can shop confidently knowing that all full-size crib mattresses adhere to these dimensions and standards, regardless of manufacturer.

Even so, that does not mean every crib mattress on the market is interchangeable. That’s because crib mattresses for mini cribs, portable cribs and playards (for example, Graco’s popular Pack ‘n Play line) are not similarly standardized.

Non-Standardized: Mini Crib Mattresses and Portable Crib Mattresses

This is where confusion can happen.

Not every crib is a standard or full-size crib. There are also mini cribs and portable cribs (sometimes called playards) on the market. These types of cribs use different mattress sizes that are not interchangeable with standard crib mattresses.

As a general rule:

• A mini crib is any crib that is smaller than a standard full-size crib, typically around 2/3rds of the size
• A portable crib or playard is a multi-functional crib that folds up for easy transport and often converts into other nursery pieces like a playpen, changing table, or bassinet

Because these types of cribs don’t have a standard size, their mattresses are not compatible with full-size cribs. In fact, their lack of standardization means that sometimes mini cribs or portable cribs from different manufacturers will not have the same dimensions. 

That doesn’t mean that mini cribs or portable cribs are inherently dangerous. Here in the United States, these products are still made to adhere to many of the same safety regulations as full-size mattresses, even without a standardized size. However, it does mean that mattresses for these sorts of non-standard cribs need to be carefully matched to the proper crib type and manufacturer specifications. The safest approach is to just stick with crib mattresses provided, sold or recommended by the crib’s manufacturer.

Why Fit Matters So Much

Crib mattress sizing matters because even a small mismatch can create gaps between the mattress and the crib frame. Those gaps can become dangerous if an infant rolls into them or becomes trapped. This is why “close enough” is not sufficient when it comes to cribs and crib mattresses.

The mattress should fit the crib properly, without leaving excessive space around the edges. Additionally, the firmness of the crib mattress is equally important when it comes to reducing the risk of suffocation or entrapment.

A Word of Caution About Imported, Older or Vintage Cribs

Parents should be especially careful with imported cribs, vintage cribs, or hand-me-down crib frames. It’s important to note that cribs and crib mattresses outside the U.S. don’t necessarily have the same dimensions, nor do they follow the same exact safety standards. That also goes for older cribs and crib mattresses made before the current safety standards were established by the CPSC.

That means even a mattress labeled “crib mattress” may not fit properly if the crib was made under a different standard or in a different era. When in doubt, it is best to check the manufacturer’s sizing requirements and make sure the crib itself meets current safety expectations.
